Clinic Services & What to Expect

The Boston STD Clinic operates as a confidential sexual health care setting within Boston Medical Center, providing testing and treatment for HIV, Hepatitis C and a broad range of sexually transmitted infections. Located on the ninth floor of the Shapiro Building, the clinic brings specialized sexual health services into an accessible downtown location. Patients can walk in for routine screening or schedule an appointment to meet with a nurse practitioner, making it easier to seek care whether you have symptoms or simply want peace of mind.

Screenings cover common infections including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis, along with HIV testing and related care. A team of specialty nurses and clinical providers performs diagnostic testing, reviews results and discusses treatment regimens with clients. Because many sexually transmitted infections can be present without noticeable signs, routine screening is encouraged for anyone who may have been exposed, while symptomatic visits allow a faster path to diagnosis and care planning.

Beyond testing and treatment, the clinic emphasizes prevention. Educational resources help clients learn about transmission, symptom awareness and protective practices, and the Safe Zone program offers pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP) guidance for people at ongoing risk. Condoms and prevention counseling are also available, and staff can talk through the practical steps of taking medication correctly and attending follow-up visits.

Confidentiality sits at the center of everything the Boston STD Clinic does. Appointments and walk-in visits are handled in a private, respectful environment where clients can ask questions openly and without judgment. The clinic serves people of all backgrounds and identities, and staff aim to make sexual health care approachable, comfortable and free of stigma, so that asking for help feels routine rather than difficult.

Planning a visit is straightforward. The clinic provides scheduled appointments alongside limited walk-in availability, with operating hours published for each day of the week and occasional closures announced for holidays or training days. Clients are encouraged to bring insurance information and a list of current medications, and to think about recent exposure dates in advance, since that context helps providers decide which tests are most useful and which prevention options fit best.

For people who have recently been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection, timely follow-up matters. The clinic can discuss post-exposure prophylaxis, window periods for testing and next steps for notifying partners if a result comes back positive. When someone tests positive, staff help clients understand treatment, monitor for reinfection and reach out to contacts, and confidential partner notification services are a standard part of the care model offered here.

The Boston STD Clinic is a grant-funded sexual health clinic focused on testing, treatment and prevention of HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections. Its setting inside Boston Medical Center means clients can combine a sexual health visit with other medical appointments in the same campus, a convenience that reduces missed visits and makes it easier to keep care consistent over time. The clinic welcomes both first-time visitors and returning clients.

Sexual health care is easier to navigate when the environment feels welcoming. The Boston STD Clinic was designed with accessibility and clarity in mind, from clear signage and helpful staff to scripts and information that explain what to expect during a visit. Whether you are scheduling your first screening, seeking treatment for symptoms, or asking about PrEP, the goal is a straightforward experience that supports long-term health and confident decision-making.

What happens at a visit

Four simple steps from check-in to results

Every client meets with a sexual health counselor for a confidential sexual risk session and STI screening.

  1. Bring your photo ID

Bring a photo ID card and your insurance card if you have insurance. Clients aged 14 or older can come to the clinic regardless of immigration status, and no parental consent is necessary.

  2. Complete a confidential interview

You will fill out a paper form with your information and identify any symptoms you are experiencing, such as discharge, cramping, painful urination, rash, sores or fever.

  3. Get tested

Blood samples are used for HIV, Hepatitis C and Syphilis; urine samples or swabs are used for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Drink plenty of fluids before your visit.

  4. Review results and treatment

All STD test results are available within 7 business days. Anyone testing positive for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea or Syphilis receives STD treatment, with a return visit to begin it.

Prevention

Effective ways to prevent HIV

Many strategies reduce risk. No strategy is 100% effective, with the exception of abstinence, but several are highly effective when used correctly.

Barrier method

Condoms

Male condoms and internal (female) condoms act as barriers against HIV and other STIs. Use adequate lubrication alongside them for best protection.

Medication

PrEP and PEP

PrEP is a once-daily medication that reduces the chance of getting HIV by about 99% when taken daily. PEP is also available as a prevention regimen.

Behavior

Fewer partners

Limiting the number of sexual partners you have is another strategy that lowers risk when practiced consistently.
